The next stage is to begin making plans for your arrival in Australia once you have obtained your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to pursue study at an Australian education or training institution and confirmation of your student visa. Make sure you’re prepared by using the pre-flight checklist below!
Pre-Flight Checklist
1. Passport
Before travelling to Australia, be sure your passport is valid for at least six months. Making hard copies of your passport is also a smart idea in case of an emergency.
2. Visa
Before you board a plane, make sure you have all of your visa papers, including an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment, or eCoE, with you. This will allow you to enter and study in Australia. More details on visas can be found on our page of frequently asked questions.
3. Vaccine documentation
Beginning on July 6, 2022, you won’t need to provide documentation of your COVID-19 vaccination to enter Australia. But we urge all travellers to have their recommended vaccinations.
Make sure you check the requirements of your airline and any countries that you are transiting through as they may have vaccination requirements
4. Flights
Make sure the date of your flight arrival gives you plenty of time to settle into your new city and institution before the start of your study period. Keep your flight details in a safe and secure place, together with your passport and visa information. Do not make arrangements to travel before you are granted a student visa.
Verify the requirements of both your study destination and your arrival city in Australia
You must be aware of and ready to fulfil the requirements for both your arrival in Australia and your study destination (if you plan to transit within Australia). Here you can get the most recent specifications for your state or region.
1. Proof of a negative COVID-19 test
The Australian government no longer requires anyone travelling to Australia to undergo a COVID-19 test before travel (proof of a negative COVID-19 test). The requirements of your airline and any nations you transit through must still be verified, though.
2. Travel Insurance
Along with your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), you should think about purchasing travel insurance, which provides coverage for things like rescheduled flights and lost luggage. Talk to your education or travel agent for more information and for advice on the best travel insurance policy for you.
3. Contact information
It’s a good idea to travel with a list of emergency contact information. As well as the information for your embassy, lodging, and institution, make a note of your family and any other personal contacts you may have in Australia. Keep the contact information of your education agent on your phone if you have used their services in case you need to get in touch with them once you are in Australia.
4. Australian currency
Although there are money conversion offices in Australian cities and airports, it is advised that you bring some Australian money with you when you arrive. For additional information on getting money and setting up a bank account, visit our page titled “Plan your arrival.”
5. What to expect when you arrive
You must also fill out an incoming passenger card. Information on what to expect at border clearance can be found on the Australian Border Force website.
6. What you can (and can’t) bring into Australia
Australia has strict border controls so you need to be aware of what you can and cannot bring into Australia. Australia’s biosecurity laws have been strengthened and penalties will apply if you fail to truthfully declare biosecurity goods at the Australian border. This means that when you arrive in Australia you must declare;
- Any food, plant material and animal items
- Firearms, weapons and ammunition
- Currency amounts of A$10,000 (or foreign equivalent)
- Some medicines
