The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and The Pearson Test of English (PTE) are the two most popular set of examinations to be conducted for assessing a candidates English language proficiency. 4. Scoring System
The IELTS and PTE Examination has no negative marking. The IELTS examination allots manual scores from a Band Range of 0-9. PTE examination on the other hand allots the automated scores from a Band Range of 10-90.
The result for the IELTS Paper Based Test takes around 13 calendar days post the test date and IELTS Computer Based Test takes around 4-5 business days whereas candidates opting for PTE examination receives their scores online after 5 business days.
The students are judged based on their Overall scores. The IELTS Examination assesses a candidates Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills on various defined parameters. However, PTE Examination assess a candidate on Oral fluency and Communicative skills. An average score of 50 to 70 in PTE is considered to be equal to 6 to 7.5 band score in IELTS.
5. Duration
The IELTS Examination is of 2 hours and 40 Minutes. It is divided according to the skills that are evaluated. The first skill asked is writing which is for 60 minutes, next is the listening skill which is for 30 minutes, lastly it is reading skill which is conducted for 60 minutes. Speaking is conducted on a separate day for 11-15 minutes.
The duration of the PTE examination is 3 hours. This time is inclusive of a 10 minutes break. Unit 1 of writing and speaking is for 77 to 93 minutes, whereas unit 2 of reading involves 32 to 40 minutes, and listening takes 45 to 60 minutes.
6. Structure of the Tests
There is quite a similarity in the structure of both the tests as far as the division among the modules (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) is concerned. However, there are quite a few differences in the pattern of the tests. Majorly, if we consider the Speaking Module. Speaking in IELTS is a conversation in person with the IELTS Examiner and the candidate. On the contrary, in the PTE Speaking test, the candidate records the answers on the system recorder. There are differences in the evaluation of the Speaking test as well. IELTS involves a physical examiner who evaluates a candidate’s speaking skills whereas PTE uses sophisticated algorithms based on tens of thousands of real-world data points to score each test. This allows to match the expertise and accuracy of a human examiner, but with the precision, consistency, and objectivity that only machine learning can achieve.
Also, the IELTS Examination has fixed timelines for each paper and the candidate may move forward or backward. However, the PTE Examination has timings for each section and the candidates can only move forward.
